SoHo

Harvey Weinstein and Ethan Hawke are regulars at the Cub Room, and that’s just one of the hip downtown spots South of Houston, or Soho. Small boutiques like Jussara, APC and Catherine are surrounded by larger outposts of major designers like Plein Sud, D&G, Tocca, Diesel and Louis Vuitton. The interior design of these boutiques, with their polished hardwood floors and streamlined leather seating, seems to compete with the clothes for our attention. Fashion guru Calvin Klein seems to appreciate these stylish environs; he makes his home in Soho’s luxe Mercer Hotel, a boutique hotel that comes complete with a restaurant starring chef Jean-Georges Vongrichten.

All this star-gazing attracts droves of bridge-and-tunnellers on weekends (which start on Thursdays here), so be sure to shop and dine on weeknights or early mornings to avoid the crush.

Jonathan Adler

Who knew pottery could be so fun? Two years ago, thirty-something ceramicist Jonathan Adler opened a 400-square-foot SoHo shop that displays just how hip "throwing" pots can be.

Le Corset

Stepping through the tube-like entrance of Comme des Garcons is strangely reminiscent of that scene in Contact.
