London’s most famous furniture and lifestyle store – at least in the eyes of SW3 and SW7 denizens -- is another regular on the Brompton Cross Saturday shopping circuit. While critics have mauled Conran’s furniture-for-the-masses chain Habitat, The Conran Shop still retains a veneer of creative originality when its designs tend to stay more or less the same year to year. But there’s nothing wrong with clean lines, cherrywood shelves, leather chairs and an ever-growing kitchen department, is there? The furniture department is, oddly, not the first destination of most shoppers. You’ll find the usual Habitat-upgraded sofas, coffee tables, lounge chairs here, but you’ll be more tempted by accessories in the kitchen department, from ramkins to designer placemats. The bathroom department has steel and chrome fixtures, but also Aesop and Neal’s Yard toiletries as well as luscious towels. So you see, you can get both the functional and the stylish here. The best thing about the Conran Shop is its location in the Michelin House, also home to Conran’s Bibendum restaurant, oyster bar and fish stall. A great place for a break between boutiques.
