The name of this home accessories boutique reflects its aspirations: to create a cosy, nourishing environment at home. Even its hard-to-find location in a residential mews points to a desire for a low profile, despite its most favoured status among magazine editors, interior designers and all-round stylish folk. Despite this earthy promise and its claim of selling "beautiful and simple objects for everyday living", Egg is an exclusive, pricey Knightsbridge haunt, favourite of the uber-stylish and trendy. Owner Maureen Dowdy hand picks labels from around the world in addition to creating a collection of own-label loungewear in beautiful linens and crisp cottons; she also holds artisans’ and craftsmen’s exhibitions. Expect hand-woven garments made from cotton, silk or different types of cashmere; casual-glamour day-wear; jewellery by the likes of Jade Jagger; natural fabric sheets and throws, shawls made from whatever is the fabric of the moment; ceramics by a host of international crafts people and ethnically inspired accessories would be at home in an Elle Deco photoshoot. Much of the clothes and home collection is sources from all over the world, with an emphasis on India, China and other Eastern regions. As you would expect, this category of minimalism and ethnicity does not come cheap – wool slippers come in at around £100, simple cotton shirts at around £200.
