browns 23-27 South Molton Street, London W1Y 1DA +44 (0)20-7495-1920 Browns was London’s first exclusive multi-designer boutique, and buyer Joan Burstein has ensured that her fashion emporium stay ahead of the competition with consistently wonderful designers. One entire section of the store is devoted to Jil Sander, so you always have a choice of black, white and cream, clean lines and perfect cuts. But even Jil Sander devotees should regularly check out the other designers, ranging from well-known designers like Ghost and Prada to Japanese masters like Comme des Garcons and Hikaru Noguchi and girly Colette Dinnigan and Elspeth Gibson. Unlike most other multi-designer boutiques, men are well catered for, whether they’re into Brit Fashion (Alexander McQueen, Clements Ribeiro) or Belgian deconstructionists (Dries van Noten and Ann Demeulemeester).Browns’ expansion into interiors and younger fashion has not undermined its exclusivity. The hipper, more urban theme of Browns Focus’ designers does not translate into grungy streetware; the designs may be more cutting edge but not any less well-cut. Of course, there is a great emphasis on phenomenally popular urban labels like Evisu and Maharishi, but you can find dressier things for the girls like Patti Shelabarger. Also sunglasses, accessories and jewellery by hip designers like Jade Jagger, mini Evisu’s and other treats for kids. Browns Living offers neutral accessories for the home, with ubiquitous ethnic inspired raw silks and brocades tossed in. Relegated to the back of the store, Living hasn’t lived up to its early beginnings and seems doomed to remain an ancillary gift inventory. Cashmere throws, chinchilla bags, ethnic bowls and other knick knacks like kangaroo fur slippers make great gifts, but beware of incongruous prices. Brown’s has very little in the way of mid-ranged fashion, but you can pick up great deals at Labels for Less a few doors down. |
