Whoever says couture is dead hasn't visited Eduardo Lucero on Beverly. Right in the heart of Los Angeles, Mr. Lucero crafts lovely, flattering, made-for-thou gowns. In the front, the shop displays a rotating selection from this season’s collection. In the back lies Lucero’s studio, complete with cutting tables, mannequins and bolts of glossy satins and deep velvets so sumptuous you just want to wrap your arms around them. The specialty here is decidedly feminine evening wear. Burnout velvet halters and long, bias-cut skirts drape incredibly smoothly, and suits hug without strangling the body. The body that fits into these clothes needn’t be a carrot-munching slenderina--Lucero designs for women with full-on curves. At last, a couturier with a heart.
