Jutta Neumann, being one of them, is either the last of a dying breed or the beginning of a trend. One block away from the increasingly hip Orchard Street, this inconspicuous Lower East Side store houses a collection of colorful homemade leather goods. Everything from handbags in blood reds and pale, watery blues to basic black key chains and magenta wrist-bands is distinctly—and refreshingly—handmade on the premises. The smell of leather and dye permeate the air, and the backroom “workshop” is completely open, making shoppers feel as if whatever they buy truly is one-of-a-kind. Like any good mom-and-pop store, prices are reasonable and the staff is friendly but not annoyingly gushy.
