comme des garçons 520 West 22nd St New York, New York 10011 1+212. 604.9200 Stepping through the tube-like entrance of Comme des Garcons is strangely reminiscent of that scene in Contact—the one where Jodi Foster walks the steel hallway connecting her to the made-for-one space shuttle. Once inside, the store’s cement floors juxtaposed with its lacquered steel fixtures complete the futuristic feel. The interior design also proves to be a suitable backdrop for the shop’s clothes. All created by avant-garde designer Rei Kawakubo, the clothes/art pieces include fuschia skirts in torn layers and muslin-like cream dresses with tiered ruffles. And while nothing here even remotely leans toward practicality, who’s really thinking about being utilitarian when they’re spending $300 on a T-shirt?
