There are two stores—one on Madison, one on Fifth. Does that mean Intermix is a (gasp) chain? It doesn’t look like a chain—plaid ponchos threaded with beads don’t exactly scream J. Crew. It doesn’t feel like a chain—the dreadlocked and the design-savvy shop here side by side, browsing through sleeveless mohair tees, charcoal-gray skirts with flirty ruffled hems and crayola-bright flannel bags. Therefore it must not be a chain. Except that it is. All chain stores are definitely not created equal.
