To find only-in-Japan designs, head to Device.  Not far from the madding crowds of Harajuku, this hidden shop is the best place to buy Tokyo designers such as Hisui and Tokyo Ripper.  A lot of the merchandise here is of the blink-and-it’s-gone variety: limited editions and one-of-a-kind hand-crafted pieces.  At first glance, the deconstructed, unisex ensembles draping the mannequins look like a sloppy mish-mosh of layers, but look closer.  The details in the construction are hand-sewn, the fabrics with their vividly colored accents exquisite.  It’s like a Mary-Kate Olsen ensemble—from afar, boho hobo crudeness, but up close, Balenciaga and Chloe craftsmanship—beautiful.
