Stick to the famous-name streets in the West End of London and you will probably be disappointed – although Regents Street has a certain attractive grandeur and a few good upmarket stores (notably Liberty and Adolfo Dominguez) the very best of the West End is found by heading off the main drag. Hidden away just north of Oxford Street is St Christopher’s Place (look out for the signpost opposite Bond Street tube). Here you’ll find the best branch of Whistles in London, along with a vibrant mix of boutiques, cafes and bars. Leading off from the other side of Oxford Street there is South Molton Street, best-known as the home of Browns boutique. Or head into the maze of side roads criss-crossing Carnaby Street for Jess James, one of the city’s best contemporary jewellers, along with the Mac cosmetics shop and plenty more. Whatever you do, don’t expect much from Oxford Street – it might be world famous but it’s an overcrowded, disappointing place to shop.
