Once a Jewish wholesale enclave, the tiny block of Orchard Street in Manhattan's Lower East Side has become its own multi-cultural island, with well-curated boutiques, French bistros, and velvet-roped nightspots sprinkled among Spanish bodegas, mom-and-pop t-shirt shops, and dry-goods discounters. Its raw streets lack the quaintness found in SoHo or Chelsea but lend a bohemian charm that those other over-developed areas now lack. And while the area's Business Improvement District is working to gentrify the area with visitor-friendly touches like walking tours, new street lamps, and wrought-iron benches, neighborhood traditions like Sunday's street vendors' market and Kosher offerings at Lower East Side landmark Katz's deli remain intact. Meanwhile, young neighborhood artists, designers, and hipsters come for restaurants like Swim, Torch, and the always-stylish Famous Ray's Pizza; bars like Kush and Orchard; performance spaces like Tonic and Luna; and, of course, for the shopping—for on the other side of Orchard's graffiti-heavy sidewalks awaits veritable buried treasure.
