Not so long ago, only a few noteworthy shops dotted the landscape east of Broadway in Lower Manhattan. The neighborhood known as Nolita, or North of Little Italy, seemed quaint and trapped in amber—a hidden enclave of narrow streets, mom-and-pop stores and quiet affordability. Slowly however, in the go-go real estate boom of the late 1990s, refugees from the Banana Republicized Soho and celebrity-clogged Tribeca fled eastward. Designers intent on showcasing their work took over tiny pizzerias and shoe repair shops to display their goods. By 1999, a slew of mini-boutiques had sprung up all over Mulberry, Mott and Elizabeth Streets, offering unique designer goodies—handmade jewelry, embroidered purses, sherbet-colored shawls and silk slippers. These days you can clothe yourself, feed yourself and furnish your home not just adequately, but beautifully in Nolita. From the narrow streets in this old neighborhood, you could fill your earthly needs with style to spare.
