Those in search of funk should hightail it to the Mission District, known in San Francisco simply as "The Mission." Parallel streets Valencia and Mission, from 16th Street all the way south to 24th, are dotted with offbeat boutiques and shops geared toward those who eschew the conventional and embrace the singular. Think not Catherine Deneuve in "Belle du Jour," but her handsome, leather-clad lover with the dangerous teeth. On any given day in the Mission, a streetwise girl could pick up a mod halter dress by an up-and-coming local designer, a new sterling silver piercing, a 1920s stainless steel file cabinet, a pair of white go-go boots a la Nancy Sinatra, an armful of ripe Mexican papayas, stepping stones for her garden, the latest Indian hip-hop tapes, a custom-made velvet stovepipe hat, and a shiny new vibrator--all before popping in for dinner and drinks at the latest hipster hot spot. Get it? The Mission is all attitude and style--leave the Gap khakis at home.
